The Kerala Human Rights Commission today suo motu registered a case in connection with the alleged death of a Tamil Nadu native in police custody in the state.
Commission chairperson P Mohandas directed the state police chief and the Kannur district police head to probe the matter and file a report within a month, a statement said.
On October 9, 48-year-old Kalimuthu, arrested in connection with a theft case, was found dead at a police station in the state.

Kalimuthu hailed from Salem in Tamil Nadu. He and another man were handed over to police on October 7 by the locals. There were reports that he was beaten up by police in custody.
Opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala had demanded a judicial probe into his death, saying there had been a "serious lapse of rules and regulations and human rights violation".
