Maharashtra government was taking measures to prevent rising suicides among police personnel, state Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde today said.
"The Home Ministry is trying to reduce the work load and work pressure of the police personnel. Domestic pressure is also responsible of rising suicides among police personnel," Shinde said here.
As per the National Crime Records Bureau data, between 2006 and 2013, Maharashtra reported 267 police suicides, the highest among all states.
"The BJP government has taken various welfare measures for policemen. Rs 800 crore has been allotted for police quarters and infrastructures. Their daily allowance has also been increased," he said.
When asked about shortage of manpower in the police force, Shinde claimed that in comparison to other states, Maharashtra has the highest number of police personnel.
"The government has brought transparency in transfers and postings of policemen. The power of transfers of policemen has been decentralised," he added.
Shinde added that the state has the lowest conviction rate and was lagging behind others states. "Therefore, the government has increased the number of judges to speed up trials.
