A 40-year-old man drowned while bathing in the Hooghly river here this afternoon, the Kolkata Police said.

Shyamal Debnath (40), a resident of Muraripukur Road, was swept away by the tide in the Hooghly at around 2.30 PM today, a senior officer of the North Port police station said.

Few local residents, who were also bathing at the same time at Sovabazar Ghat, managed to rescue him somehow from the swirling waters, but he was declared "brought dead" when taken to the R G Kar hospital, the officer added.
