A rail passenger bound for Tiruchy pushed to death a co-passenger off the train after a wordy duel between them, police said Tuesday.

The incident took place aboard the Rockfort Express when it was nearing the Tindivanam overbridge at around midnight on Monday.

Five passengers have been detained in this connection, the police said.

The body of the youth Umanath, 28, belonging to Karuveppilangurichi near Vrridhachalam, has been retrieved and sent for postmortem at the government hospital, Chengalpet, they said.

Investigation revealed there was a quarrel between Mutharasan and Umanath following which the latter was pushed off the train, the police said.

Mutharasan confessed to have been in an inebriated condition when he pushed Umanath who fell and died, they said.

Further investigation is on, they added.
