A man and his son have been allegedly beaten up by fellow passengers in a Malda-bound train on suspicion that they had stolen mobile phones and cash, a Government Railway Police (GRP) officer said Thursday.

Based on a complaint filed by the father-son duo, three passengers have been arrested, GRP inspector in-charge (IC) Bhaskar Pradhan said.

In their complaint, Nepal Lohar and his son said 10 passengers accused them of stealing phones and cash and beat them up in the general compartment of Bengaluru-Tinsukia Express on Wednesday evening, Pradhan said.

Lohar also said that he called up family members after the assault and the GRP office at Malda station was duly informed about their plight.

"Lohar and his son were rescued by GRP personnel after the train reached Malda around 10 pm on Wednesday. They claimed they were returning home to Rampur in South Dinajpur district from Bengaluru," the IC stated.

The victims have been admitted to Malda Railway Hospital, Pradhan said.

"We have arrested three out of the 10 accused passengers based on the complaint. They will be produced before court later in the day," the officer said.
