A man, who killed an Indian-origin elderly woman after he reversed his car over her, was spared jail but has been sentenced to a one-year driving ban and one-year community work by a UK court.

Usman Hussain, 39, was at the wheel of his Renault Laguna when he struck 69-year-old Surinder Kaur Singh in Cheetham Hill, last October, the Manchester Evening News reported.

Hussain's vehicle hit Kaur as he reversed from the footpath onto Cheetham Hill Road.

Kaur, a pensioner from Whitefield, was taken to hospital but died after a while.

Police said it was "a moment of carelessness that cost Kaur her life".

Hussain, from Manchester, earlier admitted causing death by careless driving.

Appearing for sentence at Manchester Crown Court yesterday, he was ordered to carry out 250 hours' unpaid work, and pay 1,000 pounds costs.

Hussain was also banned from the wheel for 12 months.

"A moment of carelessness has cost Surinder her life and consequently devastated her family", the report quoted a police official as saying.

"Usman Hussain himself is not a bad man but he too has to live with the consequences of his actions; he has her death on his conscience and a criminal record", the official said.
