Maintaining that standard of education was not up to mark, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Vir Bhadra Singh has announced that exams will made compulsory at higher levels in state schools to assess students' performance.
Most of the private schools declare results on the basis of grading system without conducting any proper examination, and hence standard of education was not up to the required level, Singh, who is on a three-day visit to Kangra district, said.
"If there were no exams, how we will come to know the performance of the children?" he said.

"We have decided that all the schools will have compulsory examination at higher levels to assess students' performance based on merit," he added.
Singh stated sudden inspection team will soon be set up to check the quality of education being imparted in schools.
"We will soon have a separate wing for sudden inspections in the schools. Besides inspecting the quality of education being imparted, it will also ensure that the teachers do not remain absent wilfully from the schools, particularly in rural areas," he said.
"If any teacher is found on leave without getting it sanctioned from authority he will be dismissed from the service," he added.
Further calling for teachers' attention to every student the Chief Minister said, "They should also concentrate on providing moral-based education to the children."
He announced the starting of science classes in GSSS Zamanabad and GSSS Raajal from next academic session.
Laying the foundation stone of Government Degree College at Takipur in district Kangra, he said, "Our focus is on providing quality education to all the children at their doorsteps."
The CM agreed in principle to open Sub-Employment Exchange at some place in Kangra.
He also announced construction of Brajeshwari Sadan at Kangra with adequate parking, cloakroom and bathrooms facilities. The 'Rehriwalas' will be adjusted in this multi-level complex.
Bed capacity of Civil Hospital, Kangra, will be upgraded from 50 to 75 beds. Veterinary Dispensary will be opened in Ranital and Gram Panchayat Tiara, he said, adding police post Gaggal will be upgraded to a Police Station.
