Press Trust of India Kolkata
Acting on a Calcutta High Court order to shift the bus terminus from Babughat, state transport minister Madan Mitra today said they are building a new terminus at Santragachi.

"By September 30 our bus terminus would be ready at a ten acre plot at Santragachi in Howrah. We have asked all the bus operators there to shift to the new place," Mitra told reporters here.

He said that the contsruction work has begun at a cost of Rs 6 crore by the Hooghly River Bridge Commissioners (HRBC).

Besides local buses, many long distance and inter-state private buses operate from Babughat.

To save the Victoria Memorial from vehicular pollution, the Calcutta High Court had ordered the state government to shift both the Babughat and Esplanade bus terminus.

However, the Esplanade terminus continues to function.

Mitra said they will run government buses to Santragachi to improve the connectivity.

"The terminus will have all passenger amenities like cafeteria, taxi booth, toilets, etc," he said.
