The CNX Nifty failed to maintain initial gains, ending lower by merely two points at 8,421 due to fresh selling in FMCG and energy sectors.
The CNX Nifty resumed higher at 8,434.5 and firmed up further to the day's high of 8,446.35 on initial buying on the back of good foreign capital inflows.
However, it declined afterwards to 8,382.50 on profit-booking before ending at 8,421, disclosing a marginal loss of 2.25 points, or 0.03 per cent.

The CNX FMCG dropped by 0.80 per cent and CNX Energy fell by 0.66 per cent.
Major losers were Tata Steel (5.27 per cent), VEDL (3.26 per cent), IDEA (2.27 per cent), Cipla (2.06 per cent) and Bank of Baroda (2 per cent).
However, Bajaj Auto rose by 6.92 per cent, followed by Coal India (3.42 per cent), Tech Mahindra (2.31 per cent), Grasim (2.23 per cent) and Axis Bank (2.19 per cent).
Turnover in the cash segment rose to Rs 15,812.95 crore from Rs 14,538.11 crore yesterday.
A total of 6,362.73 lakh shares changed hands in 67,65,705 trades and the total market capitalisation of the NSE stood at Rs 99,81,723 crore.
