Owner of a popular chain of designer apparel showrooms has received an extortion call from an unidentified person at his IT firm office in south Mumbai, demanding Rs five crore, police said today.
The accused, who used an internet call, also threatened to trigger bomb blasts at the victim's three showrooms in the city suburbs if his demand was not met, police sources said.
According to Marine Drive police, a man rang up the victim's IT firm in the last week of August and introduced himself as Yusuf Bhai when his employee picked up the landline phone. The employee was threatened by the accused, who asked him to give a message to his employer to arrange Rs five crore.
An FIR was registered at the Marine Drive police station on August 25 following a complaint by the phone call receiver, police said.
"The accused threatened the complainant that if the money is not arranged then his employer's three showrooms will be exploded with bombs," a police officer said adding the case was registered under IPC sections 384 (extortion) and 506-2 (criminal intimidation).
