The Petitions Committee of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly has recommended that cleaning surroundings and toilets should compulsorily be made part of curriculum for students from class 8 to 12.
The recommendation was described as "revolutionary" by the Committee headed by Deputy Speaker N H Shivashankar Reddy which tabled the report for the year 2014-15 in the Assembly today.
Citing stringent punishment in Singapore for not maintaining cleanliness in public places and toilets under Lee Kuan Yew's rule, the committee says though such punishments are not desirable here, cleaning of surroundings and toilets should compulsorily be made part of curriculum for students between class 8 and 12.
"Cleaning the surroundings and toilet of their school/college every day, and cleaning of public roads and toilets near their schools/collages for two hours every month should compulsorily be made part of the curriculum for students between class 8th to 10th of all government, private or aided schools," it said.
Calling this suggestion a revolutionary one for the country, the committee has recommended its complete implementation.
The committee further feels that this will help in bringing down the cast differences in the country along with cleanliness.
Stating that the suggestion made is based on the model adopted by Sri Ramakrishna Residential School in Mysore, the Committee has suggested that a separate committee be constituted in all government, private and aided schools and be implemented in six months time.
