Goa Church today extended greetings to Muslim community on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr and called for united effort to counter every form of violence perpetrated in the name of religion.
"On behalf of the Church in Goa and on my own, I wish the Muslims of our state a peaceful and joyful celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr," Archbishop of Goa and Daman Filipe Neri Ferrao said in a statement here.
"Celebrated at the end of Ramadan, it is the end of a month of many religious and social practices of fasting, prayer, almsgiving, helping the poor, visiting family and friends and others," he said.
On this occasion, the Pontifical Council for Inter-religious Dialogue (Vatican), in its message sent to Muslims worldwide, remembered those who lost their lives, goods or suffered physically and even spiritually due to violence.
"On this occasion, therefore, we would like to hold our hands together and commit ourselves to counter every form of violence perpetrated in the name of religion," the Archbishop said.
Eid-ul-Fitr, which marks the culmination of the fasting month of Ramzan (also called Ramadan), will be celebrated across the country tomorrow.
