The Pentagon has suspended Maj Gen Michael T Harrison, the commanding officer of US Army in Japan, for failing to properly investigate a sexual assault allegation.

Maj Gen Harrison was suspended of his duties as the commanding general of United States Army Japan by General Raymond Odierno, the Army chief of staff.

The Department of Defence said Maj Gen James C Boozer, the former deputy commanding general of US Army Europe, will serve as the interim commander until the investigation is complete and the issue resolved.

Harrison himself is not accused of sexual misconduct, said Army spokesman George Wright.

The sexual abuse case took place sometime in the last year, Wright said.

Harrison is one of the highest-ranking officers to be ensnared in the sexual abuse crisis gripping the military. He is a decorated soldier who has served in Afghanistan, according to US media reports.
