A PIL has been filed in the Madras

High Court seeking a direction to authorities, including Home Ministry, Ministry of Law and Justice, Chief Secretary, Tamil Nadu Government, Law Secretary, and others to frame guidelines and appropriate rules for appointment of law officers.

The petitioner, V. Vasanthakumar, an advocate of the High Court, in his petition said the post of law officer is not a political post, but it is a public post with greater responsibility in the administration of justice.

He said unless the appointment of law officers is made fairly based on merit, ability and integrity, justice delivery system would be in peril.

The petitioner alleged that nowadays the party that comes to power wants to appoint party loyalists as law officers mostly and try to make them as judges in due course.

He said he had already sent his representation in this regard to the state and central authorities for which he had not received any reply and hence the plea was filed.
