PIL on MGR memorial withdrawn

Press Trust of India Chennai

Petitioner AG Narasimhan informed the court that he was withdrawing the PIL.

A Division Bench, comprising Justices R Banumathi and R Subbiah, looking into the matter, then dismissed the PIL.

Petitioner Narasimhan had submitted on October 12 that construction work of the memorial had been initiated. The exchequer ought not to be used for implementation of the project which would not be "useful/beneficial to the public."

He also said it was inappropriate to construct the two leaves which represent the symbol of the ruling party (AIADMK).

For such construction, public money ought not to be wasted as it would amount to misuse of governmental power besides inflicting loss to the exchequer, he had contended.
