The UK Independence Party's only member of the British Parliament has criticised party leader Nigel Farage for harsh comments about immigrants during the recent campaign.

Douglas Carswell says Farage was wrong and mean-spirited when he said in a televised debate that Britons are upset by immigrants coming to Britain for treatment of health problems like HIV.

Carswell told BBC today that Farage's comments were "wrong on so many levels" and said the party must remember there is "something fundamentally generous about Britain." He said the party didn't strike the right tone at times during the campaign.

Farage has remained as party leader even though he failed to win a seat in Parliament. He is expected to spearhead the party's push to remove Britain from the European Union.
