Prepaid electric meters in residences of politicians, officers: UP minister

The Uttar Pradesh government has decided to install prepaid electric meters in the residences of politicians and officers in view of complaints that they did not pay the bill timely.

UP Energy Minister Shreekant Sharma said the state government has placed orders for purchasing one lakh such meters.

Sharma said, in a press note, that several government departments, politicians and officers owed the energy department Rs 13,000 crore.

He also said that out of 75 districts in the state, special police stations had been opened in 68 districts to deal with cases of power theft.
