A rally demanding prohibition of liquor in Yavatmal district was organised here today.

The morcha, spearheaded by Sangita Pawar whose organisation is fighting for the cause of banning alcohol, started from Azad Maidan here amid heavy police bandobast.

A delegation of its members later called upon district collector Rahul Ranjan Mahiwal and submitted a memorandum addressed to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Sale, storage and consumption of liquor is already proscribed in neighbouring districts of Wardha, Chandrapur and Gadchiroli.

District Guardian Minister Sanjay Rathod has also announced support for the cause.

When contacted, Mahiwal said, "Though the government is worried about the revenue loss (if liquor is banned), it would soon take a positive decision on the demand."

Leaders of various political parties and NGOs spoke in support of ban.
