Relatives of a nonagenarian today staged a sit-in dharna in front of a private hospital here, where he is undergoing treatment, seeking the government to pay the bill, as reportedly promised.

The 94-year-old Marappa Gounder was injured in the recent bus stand collapse in Somanur on the outskirts and admitted to the private hospital here.

The relatives said the ministers and the officials who had visited the site and hospital had promised to take care of hospital bill and had paid Rs 50,000 as initial payment.

Stating that they had paid Rs 1.25 lakh so far for the medical expenses, the relatives said that the hospital was demanding Rs two lakh more to discharge the patient.

They said they were unable to pay Rs two lakh more to get Gounder discharged.

The relatives said the government should keep their promise that it would meet the medical expenses and held a sit-in dharna.
