The Pakur district committee president of Samajwadi Party (SP), Azfarul Sheikh alias Laden was arrested on charges of stealing a motorcycle, police today said.
Laden was caught red-handed after he drove away the motorcycle from Tanti Para under Town police station last evening, officer-in-charge of the police station Ujjawal Shah said.
The owner of the two-wheeler raised an alarm and people gave Laden a chase, forcing the SP leader to abandon the vehicle and flee the scene.
However, people caught hold of him and handed him over to the police.
Laden has been sent to jail today, Shah said.
Laden's nephew Nazbi Alam was also a two-wheeler lifter and was caught by the police on several occasion.
