A large number of devotees today took holy dips in sacred tanks of historic Gurdwara Darbar Sahib and other Sikh shrines in and around the town on the occasion of Maghi.
People also gathered in large numbers at Takhtupura in nearby Moga and at other shrines located in Faridkot, Nanaksar and Daroli Bhai.
After taking bath in holy sarovars (sacred tanks) devotees paid obeisance at Gurdwaras where prayers were also conducted.

Maghi is celebrated at Muktsar in the memory of forty brave Sikh soldiers who deserted 10th Sikh Guru Gobind Singh at Anandpur Sahib, but later joined the Guru at Muktsar and sacrificed their lives while fighting against the Mughals in the last battle of the Guru in 1705.
According to the legend, the Guru personally cremated the martyrs on the day following the festival of Lohri.
In 2005, the then Chief Minister Amarinder Singh had laid the foundation stone of forty 'Muktas' (the redeemed ones) memorial here, but the monument built in their memory is lying in poor condition.
