At least 15 unidentified men today attacked a site office of Mumbai-based realty firm Housing Development and Infrastructure Ltd (HDIL) in suburban Santacruz, smashing the entrance glass door, police said.

Additional Police Commissioner Milind Bharambe said a group of 15-20 men, wielding a chopper and rods, reached the site office of the HDIL and began breaking the entrance glass door.

A private security guard at the site fired one round in the air from his firearm, following which the assailants ran away.

The accused had covered their faces with handkerchiefs, the officer said, adding, "Complainant Yusuf Pathan, the site manager, told us that the attackers could be associated with one Zulfikar, who had tried to extort Rs 8 lakh from him in November last year."

Currently, Zulfikar is in jail and the extortion angle is being probed, Bharambe added.
