BJP today held the Uttar Pradesh government responsible for the mine tragedy in Mahoba district in which five persons were killed and alleged that illegal mining was being carried out in the state "under the patronisation" of the Akhilesh Yadav dispensation.

"The state government is responsible for the death of mine workers in Charkhari. The incident is a result of illegal mining. The big question is how mining activity was undertaken there when the lease had ended two years ago," BJP state unit chief Keshav Prasad Maurya said.

He said that illegal mining had claimed the lives of several workers in Sonbhadra as well and alleged that such activities were being carried out "under the patronisation" of the government.

Five persons were feared killed when the side wall of a mine collapsed during stone quarrying at Charkhari area yesterday.

Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has ordered a thorough probe into the incident by a five-member committee.
