The BJP-led Maharashtra government is likely to convene a special session of the legislature in coming days to pass the State Goods and Services Tax (SGST) Act.

A senior official of the Finance Department said here on the condition of anonymity today that the Centre had asked the Maharashtra Government to get SGST Act passed by May 31.

The state has already decided to implement the Goods and Services Tax (GST) law as enacted by the Centre from July 1.

The state will need to pass its own enabling SGST Act before July 1 to give effect to the uniform taxation law, GST.

The government had convened a one-day special session of state legislature on August 29 last year to ratify the 122nd Constitutional amendment bill which introduced the GST.

"This time the special session might be convened for two to three days as the legislature will need to have a debate on the state-specific law," the official said.

Meeting of the GST Council is scheduled this week to discuss implementation of the SGST, said the official.
