Punjab government today gave approval to set up Authorised Testing Station (ATS) here on public private partnership model in collaboration with the Central Institute of Road Transport (CIRT), Pune.
The state transport department gave nod to set up ATS and has roped in the CIRT as project management consultant to establish it, an official spokesperson said today.
Initially, ATS will be set up to inspect and certify the in-use transport vehicles for there safety and emission compliance as per The Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, the spokesperson said in a release.

As per the new proposed Motor Vehicle Act, there is a proposal for mandatory inspection and certification of Non-Transport vehicles every five years, he said.
The ATS will house inspection lanes for testing various categories of vehicles, the spokesperson said, adding the lane will have test equipment arranged like a production line through which the vehicles will go through for the inspections.
