Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami today inaugurated a Rs 1,634 Crore urban health care plan project, aimed at shoring up healthcare infrastructure in urban State-run hospitals.

Government hospitals in urban areas will be upgraded under the seven year tenure project, for which the Japan International Co-operation Agency has extended loan assistance, an official release here said.

Under the project, which will cover 17 cities and 21 hospitals, top class surgical and medical amenities will be provided for Non-Communicable Diseases including heart ailments, diabetes and cancer.

Improving healthcare quality, service facilites, strengthening equipment and human resources capacity in State run hospitals are among the features of the project.

Top government officials participated in the launch function held at the State Secretariat here today.

An official release here recalled that late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had in a suo moto statement in the assembly last year announced upgradation of health care facilities in State-run hospitals.

To fulfill it, the Rs 1634 Crore Tamil Nadu Urban Health Care Project was announced in the 2016-17 interim budget.

The project also aims at further improving the overall urban healthcare infrastructure in Tamil Nadu and JICA extended its loan assistance for it, the government said.

DMK has been for long taunting the AIADMK regime for "not implementing," any suo moto announcements made in the Assembly, a charge regularly rubbished by the government.
