Tamil Nadu Governor K Rosaiah today said despite being an ancient literature in the world, Tamil literature was unable to "attract sufficient attention" from foreign countries due to lack of translation.
"Tamil literature is one of the most ancient literatures in the world. Even though the ancient works have been translated into western languages, modern Indian literature, including Tamil literature, is not able to attract sufficient attention from foreign countries due to the lack of translation", he said at a function.
"We need to translate Indian literary masterpieces into English and other European languages", he said after releasing the Tamil translation of the play of Nobel Laureate Albert Camus, here.
Translating Indian literature would not only "bring to the fore" the greatness of Indian literature but also "build bridges between Indian and Foreign languages and enrich our cultural relations at International level", he said, noting that Indian literature was "far richer" than European literature.
"Translation is a very important intellectual activity which builds bridges with the people of various countries and continents", he said.
