Tomar's arrest Centre's conspiracy to overlord Delhi govt: CPI

CPI today termed former Delhi Law Minister Jitendra Singh Tomar's arrest in the alleged fake degree case as a "conspiracy" by the Centre to "overlord" Arvind Kejriwal-led elected government and also sought similar action against Union minister Smriti Irani.

49-year-old AAP leader, MLA from Delhi's Trinagar constituency and a first-time minister, was remanded in four-day police custody by a Delhi court on Tuesday.

CPI asked why Union HRD Minister Irani too should not be arrested if FIRs and cases pending before court are to be basis of police action, allegedly like in the case of Tomar.

"The confrontation between Chief Minister (Kejriwal) and Lieutenant Governor (Najeeb Jung) in Delhi is not of constitutional nature. It only reflects the Modi regime's bid to overlord an elected government and rule the national capital through proxy.

"Tomar's arrest is vicious reflection of this conspiracy. Without going into question of fake certificate, one can safely conclude his arrest is part of conspiracy that the Union government has hatched to revert popular verdict," CPI national council secretary Shameem Faizee alleged in the editorial of forthcoming issue of party mouthpiece 'New Age'.

Questioning the "logic" and "haste" behind police action against the AAP leader, while two cases in this regard are pending before judiciary, Faizee said "let the courts decide the matter".

"By the way, if FIR and cases pending before courts are to be basis for police action, then what about similar cases against ministers and MPs in the Modi camp.

"The moment Tomar was arrested; it struck to the mind of even most common man that a similar case is pending against Irani. She too has claimed different educational qualifications while filing nominations for contesting elections on three different occasions. Why not sack Irani and also arrest her?" Faizee asked.

Stressing there are other MPs too who are facing more "grave" charges, he also pointed towards Chandrababu Naidu's alleged involvement in a note-for-vote scam.
