Tribals take out 'Birhad Morcha' demanding wage hike

Press Trust of India Thane
Thousands of villagers from the predominantly tribal Mokhada taluka in the district took out a 'Birhad Morcha' demanding increase in daily wages and employment under government schemes.

The villagers from the taluka yesterday marched to the tehsil office along with their household belongings. As a part of the demonstration, they also cooked food there and served it to the officials.

In Mokhada, the MGNREGS labourers were getting only Rs 11 after a day's work, Vijay Jadhav, joint secretary of Shramjivi Sanghatana, working for the uplift of tribals in the state, claimed today.

He said that the concerned officials later assured the tribals that those who did not get work would be given non-employment allowance and their other demands, including wage hike, would also be looked into.
