Tripura sports minister congratulates Dipa

Tripura Sports Minister Shahid Chowdhury today congratulated gymnast from the state Dipa Karmakar for becoming the first Indian woman to book a berth in the Olympics.

"We all in the state are today proud, delighted and excited," Chowdhury told PTI.

He hoped that she would win a medal in the Rio Games.

Dipa created history by becoming the first Indian woman gymnast to qualify for Olympics as she booked a berth for the Rio Games after a strong performance at the final qualifying and test event in Rio de Janeiro.

Within hours, the Sports Authority of India included her in the Target Olympic Podium Scheme, the government's initiative to fund Olympic medal prospects in their preparations for the Games.
