The HRD Ministry today sought fresh nominations for the post of vice chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), weeks after it disbanded a selection panel after sitting on its recommendations for over six months.

The higher education regulator has been functioning without a regular chairperson and vice-chairperson since April this year.

In November, the Ministry of Human Resource Development had disbanded the selection panel headed by Higher Education Secretary K K Sharma.

While no reason was cited behind the scrapping of earlier panel, fresh nominations were sought.

"The committee reserves the right to consider persons of eminence outside the list of such nominations. In accordance with the procedure evolved by the panel, nominees would be shortlisted based on agreed parameters and may be invited for an interaction with the committee," an official notification said.

Candidates meeting the required academic credentials and experience can apply for the post till January 3, it said.
