Unidentified body of a middle-aged

man, suspected to have been murdered, was exhumed from near a salt pan in Bhayander township of Thane district, police said today.

Police yesterday morning received a message that foul smell was emanating from near the salt pan in the township.

A police team rushed to the spot and exhumed the highly decomposed body, which was found buried in a pit there, Bhayander police station inspector S D Vadke said.

It was suspected that the killers allegedly strangulated the man with a handkerchief and later to destroy the evidence, they buried the body near the salt pan, police said.
 

The body has been sent for postmortem.

An case has been registered against unknown persons under sections 302 (murder) and 120(b) of the IPC, police said adding, search for the killers was on.
