Tripura today celebrated Vijay Divas to mark the victory of the Indian Army in the Indo-Pak War of 1971, resulting in the creation of Bangladesh.

Governor Devanand Konwar, along with senior officials and Army officers, paid floral tributes at the war memorial here and the Border Security Force (BSF) exchanged sweets with their counterparts in the Border Guards of Bangladesh at different places along the Indo-Bangla border.

The state has 856 km border with the neighbouring country which constitutes 85 per cent of its total border.

The Bangladesh Visa office here organised a seminar on the memories of the war and also organised cultural programmes with patriotic songs and recitations.

Tripura was the war headquarters of Bangladesh liberation soldiers, and from here they launched guerrilla war against the Pakistani soldiers.

The Pakistani soldiers were defeated in a fight against the joint command of the Indian Army and the Mukti Joddhas on December 16, 1971 and signed the instrument of surrender in Dhaka, 140 kms from here.
