The West Bengal government is yet to decide on its future course of action after the Calcutta High Court ruled that allowances for Imams and Muezzins given by the government are unconstitutional.
"We are yet to receive the copy of the Calcutta High Court order on allowances for Imams and Muezzins. It will be decided only after we get it," West Bengal Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim said replying to a question if the state government would move the Supreme Court challenging the HC order.
Earlier in the day, Calcutta High Court gave the ruling that the allowance announced by the state government for Imams and Muezzins, is unconstitutional and against public interest.
A division bench of Justice P K Chattopadhyay and Justice M P Shrivastava passed the order on a writ petition challenging the announcement.
Hakim, however, assured the Imams and Muezzins that as long as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her government would be there, interest of the poor minorities would remain protected.
"Nothing to be worried for the poor minorities including the Imams and Muezzins. Chief Minister is taking all measures for their economic and social uplift," Hakim said.
