The Bombay High Court today asked Maharashtra government to inform what steps it had taken to fill up the vacant posts of chairperson and member at Maharashtra State Commission for Women.

The government shall submit reply within two months, the court said.

The direction was passed by the division bench headed by Justice Naresh Patil on a petition filed by RTI activist Vihar Dhruve.

The Commission is a statutory body with the objective of improving status and dignity of women in the society and probe practises derogatory to women besides suggesting suitable remedial measures, the petition points out, adding that these objectives would not be fulfilled if posts like chairperson are left vacant for a long time.

The government is not taking any step in this regard, it states.
