Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu today said he always preferred to serve the people of Punjab and intended to do the same in future, days after he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha.
Sidhu, a three-time Lok Sabha MP who had to make way for BJP senior Arun Jaitley to contest from Amritsar, praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and described him as "a great role model in my life".
"Two years ago, I had refused Rajya Sabha berth in return for relinquishing the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat for a fatherly figure. The present nomination by the Prime Minister is more significant for me as he is not only a great example of inspiration but a great role model in my life.
"If this nomination takes me towards the welfare of Punjab and India first, I will take it a bow. If it takes me away from the welfare of my state, I would rather stay away from the Rajya Sabha than stay away from Punjab," he said.
