The Uttarakhand government today decided to hold the Winter Session of the state Assembly in Gairsain from December 7 to 13.

Gairsain, a remote hill town in Chamoli district, was envisioned as the state capital during the statehood agitation and demands were later raised to make it the permanent capital of Uttarakhand.

A proposal to hold the Winter Session in Gaisain was cleared by the state cabinet at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Trivendra Singh Rawat, Urban development Minister Madan Kaushik told reporters.

However, the dates for the session are tentative, he said.

Rawat said holding an Assembly session in Gairsain meant fulfilling an old promise made by the state government to the people.

"We had planned to convene our first Assembly session (after the BJP came to power in the state) in Gairsain but we could not do so as we weren't fully prepared. By holding an Assembly session there now we are fulfilling an old promise," he said.

"It will also provide the MLAs a chance to have a first- hand experience of the problems faced by people of the hills. We also want to give a message to the people that our focus is on the development of remote areas," Rawat told reporters.
