Woman trampled to death by herd of wild elephants

An old woman was trampled to death by a herd of wild elephants in East Singhbhum district, a police officer said on Wednesday.

A herd of pachyderms entered Baruakocha village in search of food on Tuesday night.

The herd entered the house of one Durga Soren and trampled to death his 60-year-old grandmother, the officer said.

On being informed of the incident, Forest department officials along with a police team reached the village on Wednesday and recovered the body.

The forest department has handed Rs 10,000 to the family of the deceased for the cremation of the body, an officer said, adding that compensation will be paid as per government norms.
