World AIDS Day observed in jail premises to educate inmates

An awareness campaign was organised at the district Modern Jail here on World AIDS Day today to educate the inmates about the spread of HIV.

The jail has 113 HIV positive inmates. In the last one and a half years, five inmates suffering from HIV had died.

District and Sessions Judge R S Rai, Chief Judicial Magistrate Sanjeev Kumar Kundi, also the secretary, district legal authority, Civil Surgeon Dr H S Kahlon, Jail Superintendent Gurpreet Singh Gill, district police personnel and specialist doctors of local civil hospital attended the camp.

Dr Kahlon said of the 113 HIV positive inmates, 79 were detected this year and all of them are under antiretroviral therapy in Jalandhar.
 

According to Gill, the prison authorities have set up a separate cell in the jail complex for the 113 HIV positive inmates.
