Farmers shouldn't have to commit suicides for lack of funds: Modi

Rajan says push to fund infra should not override the need for financial stability

Reuters Mumbai
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the thinking of the Reserve Bank of India and government on financial matters was often quite similar, although he did not provide any specifics.

Meanwhile, addressing the need to push for financial inclusion, Modi said farmers should not have to resort to suicides because of a lack of funds.

Over a dozen debt-laden farmers have committed suicide in recent weeks, and discontent in many rural areas against government policies is turning into anger against Modi less than a year after he swept into office.

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said the government would restore the credibility of decision-making, while easing processes and making India's tax structure non-adversarial.

Meanwhile, Reserve Bank of India governor Raghuram Rajan said the country's push to finance infrastructure should not override the need for financial stability.
