Bengal Mulls Rs 1500cr Tourism Proposals

Proposals worth Rs 1,500 crore are currently being discussed, which could provide a fillip to the tourism industry in West Bengal. This was disclosed by the state minister for tourism Manabendra Mukherjee, at a meeting on the "Prospects of tourism industry in West Bengal -role of state government for sustainable development", at Calcutta called by the Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry" on Tuesday. A sum of Rs 600 crore has already been invested in the state in the four years since the government adopted the new tourism policy.

He also mentioned that the government would shortly announce the final plans on privatising the Great Eastern Hotel.

 

Further, the minister said that in Shankarpur, the state government was considering the development of a planned tourism township worth an estimated Rs 1,000 crore, covering 2, 700 acres with Hudco.

This would be the first of its kind in the country. Hudco has conducted a feasibility study.
