Csir Develops New Method To Extract Nickel

India imports its total requirement of nickel which is about 25,000 tonnes every year valued at Rs 1,000 crore. Nickel is extensively used in the manufacture of stainless steel, superalloys and many other special alloy steels.

CSIR has signed a memorandum of understanding with Hindustan Zinc Ltd to exploit the new nickel technology. As part of the MoU, a 10 tonnes per day technology proving plant will be established. If the demonstration plant proves successful, then HZL will set up a 10,000 TPA plant at a cost of Rs 700 crore. The MoU signed here last week by CSIR director general R A Mashelkar and KVK Seshavataram, chairman and managing director HZL also involves TATA Steel

 

in the running of the technology proving plant.

The private sector steel giant was interested in learning about the new nickel extraction technology given its fantastic potential.
