Govt Committed To Promoting Science Research: Gowda

Paul Jacob BSCAL

Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda yesterday reiterated his governments commitment to supporting research in the fundamental sciences.

Inaugurating the golden jubilee celebrations of the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad, Gowda said such support was vital for India to scale high levels of technological capability which in turn was crucial to sustaining a vibrant economy.

He recalled that it was the pioneering work in the space sciences undertaken by the laboratory that propelled a full-fledged national space programme of which the country is now proud.

Deve Gowda paid his tributes to PRL founder Vikram Sarabhai and K R Ramanathan, whose disciplines of cosmic ray physics and meteorology respectively were applied to the real needs of man and his environment.

The work of such stalwarts not only provided a better understanding of the planet and its fragile environment but also of the monsoons for a sustainable development of and water resources, particularly important to the rural economy.

PRL not only started research in such basic areas but also derived benefits out of it through the national space programme, the Prime Minister added.
