Hyderabad Tops List Of B-School Sites

A consortium of top Indian industrial houses has favoured Hyderabad as the location for the management institute to be set up by it in association with the Wharton School of Management and the Kellogg's School of Management, sources said. The industrial houses include Reliance, Hindustan Levers, Tatas, Birlas, Bajaj, Mahindra, Godrej, HDFC and McKinsey. The project, involving an investment of over Rs 100 crore, aims at developing a source base for world-class management professionals. Incidentally, McKinsey & Co has been signed by Andhra Pradesh as consultants to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on his Vision 2020 project. The state has offered 250 acres near Madapur for the setting up of the institute. It has also promised incentives like stamp duty exemption for registration of land. The members of the consortium visited Hyderabad recently and inspected the available infrastructure. Naidu, too, gave a presentation on the state's efforts to make Hyderabad a global destination for investments as well as tourists.
The institute was originally planned to be located near Mumbai. But the insistence of the Maharashtra government for reservation of a minimum percentage of seats for "locals" forced the sponsors to look for alternative sites. The sponsors want admission into the institute to be purely on merit.
Apart from Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai were also shortlisted as prospective locations.
