Imf To Decide Loan Soon: Camdessus

BSCAL

Pakistan has been negotiating an agreement with the International Monetary Fund over the $600 million standby loan considered crucial for shoring up the nations finances.

We will have to make this judgement in the next few days and then you will hear about our decision, Camdessus told reporters during a conference on macroeconomic issues.

Camdessus said the IMF programme with Pakistan went off track last month, well before President Farooq Leghari sacked prime minister Benazir Bhutto on Tuesday.

The IMF and the Pakistani authorities were working hard to put together a programme which should bring Pakistan back on course in its reforms.

We are indeed continuing our work. We have to assess the situation to make a judgement on the possibility during the next few months and particularly before the next election, Camdessus said.
