India To Remain Self-Sufficient In Food: World Bank

India will remain nearly self-sufficient in food, says a World Bank study, projecting the demand and supply of food in the world till the year 2020.
According to the study, till 1992 India was producing enough food to give its people an average of 2,395 calories a day, against the accepted minimum daily requirement of 2,200-2,300 calories set by the Food & Agriculture Organisation.
The study entitled Global Food Supply Prospects pointed out that despite the lack of progress in some countries, there had been a steady improvement in the global situation. Calories available in developing countries increased from 1,923 calories per person per day in 1961 to 2,541 calories by 1992.
