India Unhappy With Earth Summit Followup Results

Environment minister Saifuddin Soz has said that though the followup session to the Earth Summit has not matched the expectations of developing countries like India, there is no cause for despair.

My impression is that the results of the summit fell far below our expectations but I must say that altogether it is not a scenario of utter despondency, Soz, who headed the Indian delegation to a week-long Special Session of the UN General Assembly, said.

The summit, which assessed the progress made on Agenda 21 since it was adopted at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992, concluded with hardly any concrete result.

 

At the end of the meet, officially known as Rio+5 or Earth Summit Plus 5, representatives from 170 participating nations were unable to arrive at a consensus on three important issues
