Maharashtra It Policy On Aug 15

The Maharashtra government will declare a state policy on information technology by August. This was announced by Chief Minister, Manohar Joshi at a forum - Services Sector : Transforming Maharashtra - organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) in Mumbai on Saturday.
The participants included distinguished industrialists such as Anand Mahindra, chairman, CII (Western Region), R Basu, chief executive officer, News Television India Ltd., Nimesh Kampani, chairman J M Financial and Investment Consultancy Services, and others. Chief secretary to the government of Maharasthtra P.Subramanyam and industry minister Liladhar Dake were also present at the venue. The state government also chose this occasion to sign memoranda of understanding with Infosys Ltd, VSNL and Software Technology Park of India. The government will provide the necessary infrastructure to Infosys to set up shop at Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation's (MIDC) software technology park at Balewadi, Pune
Joshi also said the government planned to hold an Agro-Advantage Maharashtra conference along the lines of Advantage Maharashtra held earlier this year. Twenty-five countries have agreed to participate in the conference, he said.
He also assured that the Mumbai-Pune Expressway would be made functional by January 2000. The CII forum selected four sectors as representative of the service industry. Panel discussions were held on each and based on presentations made by eminent professionals an agenda was evolved by each of the four panels - financial services, information technology, tourism and media and logistics. The main areas identified by all four panels before the chief minister were infrastructure, rationalisation of taxes, education, greater transparency.
