Scrips Register Gains

Renewed buying interest by foreign institutional investors and domestic institutions improved the trading sentiment on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday. The NSE-50 index closed 14.05 points higher to close at 1064.95 against the previous close of 1050.90. The Midcap index closed at 1118.40, a gain of 2.25 points from the previous close of 1116.15 points.

The total traded volume on the exchange touched Rs 1614.62 crore with 5.74 crore scrips changing hands. Market sources said that yesterday's rally was lead by ITC, which closed at Rs 473.70, a gain of Rs 39.55 over the previous close of Rs 444.15 and the traded volume touched Rs 573.63. This apart, the main gainers during yesterday's trade were Tata Tea Rs 313.35 (Rs 292.85), Cochin Refineries Rs 148.80 (Rs 139.10), Housing Development & Finance Corporation Bank Rs 59.30 (Rs 56.60), and Hindustan Lever Ltd Rs 1,149.25 (Rs 1,110.25).

 

The Reliance turnover was Rs 355.02 crore. It closed at Rs 301.05 against the previous close of Rs 304.55. According to sources, the market is expected to witness a slump today as it is the last day of settlement. The punters may pull the market down. However, the overall sentiment is upbeat, said a NSE dealer.

Among the top five losers during the trading were, Great Eastern Shipping Rs 31.75 (Rs 32.70), Essar Steel Rs 12.20 (Rs 12.50), Mahindra and Mahindra Rs 346.10 (Rs 351.45), Thermax Rs 284.95 (Rs 288.20) and Ranbaxy Rs 597.30 (Rs 603.80).

Hectic activity was also observed at the other counters like Tata Tea Rs 17.19 crore, Bank of India Rs 14.21 crore, MTNL Rs 13.95 crore, Bajaj Auto Rs 7.62 crore, Bharati Tel Rs 6.73 crore, Colgate Rs 6.43 crore, IPCL Rs 6.27 crore, BSES Rs 5.65 crore, Bhel Rs 5.45 crore, Hero Honda Rs 5.10 crore, Lakme Ltd Rs 3.17 crore, Castrol Rs 2.71 crore, Ponds Rs 2.54 crore, Hind Petro Rs 2.49 crore, Aptech Rs 2.12 crore and Ongc Rs 2.05 crore.

Meanwhile the OTC composite index opened at 80.96, touched the day's high of 81.17 and remained stagnant till the close of the day, losing about 0.15 points over the previous close of 81.27 points.
