Delhi-based Shyam Telecom yesterday launched its digital enhanced cordless telephony (DECT)-based wireless-in-local-loop (WiLL) solution for basic telecom services here.

The system, named DECTxs and unveiled earlier this year in Delhi, is among the cheapest WiLL systems in the world, company executives said.

According to company chairman Rajiv Mehrotra, for applications with more than 10,000 subscribers, the cost works out to between $300-350 (Rs 10,800-12,600) per subscriber. And even while serving smaller numbers of 300 to 500 subscribers, the price per subscriber is under $500 (Rs 18,000).

The DECTxs system has been jointly developed with the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai, and Analog Devices Inc of US. Operating on the 1880-1900 MHz frequency band, the system is based on the micro-cellular architecture and has an operating radius of around three km. Experimental systems are operational in Chennai and in South-East and West Asia.
